5 min readThe 90% Rule: What Actually Works in Nutrition
Dr. Andy Galpin opens this audience Q&A episode with a framing device that reveals his entire philosophy: the "90%." Across thousands of different diets, eating styles, and nutritional programs, roughly 90% of what makes them effective is the same. The remaining 10% is individual variation—keto versus high-carb, intermittent fasting versus frequent meals, specific food eliminations. Most people get lost arguing about the 10% before they've mastered the 90%.
The 13–14 Non-Negotiables
Galpin walks through the consistent elements that appear in virtually every effective nutrition plan. First is food quality—mostly single-ingredient, minimally processed foods, most of the time. He is careful with his language: not "always," not "never," just "most of the time for most people." Second is caloric balance, which does not require calorie counting but does require some method of regulation. Time-restricted eating, eliminating food groups, or following a Mediterranean diet all work because they regulate caloric balance one way or another.

Show Notes
In this episode, I answer your questions on nutrition, hydration, and recovery in our second audience Q&A. I start with what I call the 90%: the principles nearly every effective nutrition plan shares, from food quality and caloric balance to fiber targets, vegetable volume, color variety, and liquid calories. I then cover the four elements of fueling around training, glucose, amino acid availability, hydration, and GI distress, including the Galpin Equation for fluid intake during exercise. I walk through the three-step process I use to coach nutrition, which begins by adding nutrients rather than restricting them, and I explain when body recomposition is possible, what the protein data actually support, and why strength training is a bigger signal for muscle growth than protein. I close with what separates high performers from everyone else: energy management. This episode is for anyone who wants the fundamentals before the fine-tuning.
