The body knows something that the mind often forgets: opening without strength wobbles, and strength without mobility grows stiff. This insight, which Wendy Jones first felt on her yoga mat years ago, became the foundation for a somatic meditation exploring the rhythm between two fundamental human needs—the courage to stretch into something new and the steadiness required to hold it.
The Ground That Makes Movement Safe
Before any opening can happen, the body needs to know it is held. The meditation begins by directing attention to every place the body meets solid support—the backs of the legs, the seat, the spine, the soles of the feet. Jones invites a simple shift: letting the weight settle into that support about five percent more than a moment ago. From there, she guides the listener to imagine roots growing from the base of the spine and the soles of the feet, reaching down through floor and foundation into cool dark earth. Each exhale sends them deeper. The roots curve around stone without difficulty, finding their own way. "Notice what happens in the chest and belly when the body feels held from below," she says. "Something may soften on its own. That's the body recognizing support." This is the key mechanism: grounding first allows every other movement to feel safe.
