🎙️ The Speakers & Context

  • The Format: This is a host-led interview podcast (Twist).
  • The Key Players:
    • Host: Alex, the podcast host, acting as a curious and strategic interlocutor.
    • Guest 1: Tom Mueller, CEO and CTO of Impulse Space. Credibility: Former co-founder of SpaceX and key architect of its Merlin engine.
    • Guest 2: Tessa Lau, CEO and founder of Dusty Robotics. Credibility: Deep expertise in robotics and construction tech.
  • The Vibe: Technical, Optimistic, and Strategic. The host pushes for market realities and business model specifics.

🎣 The Executive Hook

  • The "One Big Idea": The next frontier of the space economy isn't just launching mass, but moving it efficiently once in orbit. Impulse Space's Helios is a "third stage" that acts as a high-speed space truck, turning a cheap Falcon 9 launch into a heavy-lift mission to GEO or the Moon, effectively bypassing the need for expensive heavy-lift rockets for many missions.
  • Why It Matters: This fundamentally changes the unit economics of space logistics. By decoupling the "last mile" of orbital delivery from the launch vehicle, it unlocks a new class of commercial and government missions, from rapid satellite deployment to affordable lunar cargo, all without waiting for Starship's full maturity.

Today’s show:

Want to get to space? Several launch companies can help you. SpaceX, Rocket Lab, the Russians, the list goes on. But what about once you make it upstairs, then what? Impulse Space CEO and CTO Tom Mueller is building the next stage of our orbital economy. With its Mira and Helios spacecraft, we’ll soon be able to take mass from lower orbits to higher orbits, or even to the Moon, with ease.

Meanwhile, venture capitalists are enamored with the idea of humanoid robots — robots share our shape, our work environment, and even our tools. But startups like Dusty Robotics are taking a different tack; instead of building human-shaped robots, Dusty has built a small, wheeled 'bot that can mark out building sites quickly and accurately. And it’s doing more revenue than all humanoid robotics companies combined, I reckon. Dusty’s CEO, Dr. Tessa Lau, joins Alex to go deep on purpose-built robots in today’s build-crazy market.
