Juliet Warner had everything a kid could want—loving parents, two sisters who never struggled with substances, and a childhood that looked perfect from the outside. Yet by age 19, she was shooting heroin. Her first experience with opiates felt like finding "the love of my life." That moment, she says, she knew: "This is how it's gonna have to go."

The Predisposition, Not the Trauma

Warner is careful to distinguish her story from the common narrative that addiction requires a traumatic origin. "If you looked at my childhood from the outside, I had everything any kid would want," she says. Her sisters never went down the same road. What she describes instead is a spiritual emptiness she lacked the language for as a teenager. "I think it's truly because I'm a spiritual being having a human experience, and I was trying to quench a spiritual thirst with drugs and alcohol."

From her first high school party, she never had an off switch. "I'm not the type of girl that ever had an off switch," she says. "I never had a conversation with myself like, maybe I shouldn't do this much tonight." That lack of internal regulation is common among addicts, she explains—something deeper than just wanting to party or feel better.
