Ben Maller was standing outside Bova's Bakery in Boston's North End after midnight, pastry box in hand, when he made the mistake of opening Instagram. Within seconds, Blind Scott—a longtime listener whose online behavior had spiraled from eccentric into genuinely threatening—was messaging him. Blind Scott's entrance was pure theater—or at least an attempted theater. Maller spotted a shadowy figure limping down the dimly lit street, using a cane. The limp was too dramatic.
