But on the Ben Maller Show, host Ben Maller parsed Johnson's words as a "public humiliation ritual" — polite code for "congratulations on finally acting like a professional instead of an immature lazy clown who floated through last season."

Maller argued that Johnson's praise for Williams showing up early, staying late, and taking a more serious approach is really just celebrating "basic NFL adulting." You don't get extra credit for doing what every adult is supposed to do. The real problem, Maller pointed out, is that Chicago doesn't need Caleb Williams to become less goofy — they need him to become far more accurate. Williams completed roughly 58% of his passes last season, while Johnson talks about a 70% completion rate as the goal. "Congratulations on graduating from Goofy University," Maller said. "Now see if you can just complete the basic throws. The simple throws. The highlight throws are fun. The simple throws — that's what you need."
