A Cardinal Mistake

Marvin Harrison Jr., the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has exactly one catch for 33 yards through two games of his rookie season. But the stat line is not the real problem. The real problem is what the cameras caught: video clips of Harrison jogging through routes, looking disengaged, and appearing to give something less than full effort on plays where the ball was not coming his way. Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur responded by blaming the video on Harrison's "different running style" and insisted the criticism was unfair. Ben Maller's reaction was blunt: "You cannot watch that video clip of play after play of Marvin Harrison Jr. dogging it and then say your eyes are unreliable."

The Gaslighting Problem

Maller's central argument is that coaches defending players is normal and expected. Every NFL coach bends the truth to protect his guys. But there is a line between protecting a player and gaslighting the fanbase. When the tape blatantly contradicts the coach's defense, the coach has already lost the argument. "If you have to hold a news conference to explain why one of your alleged star players is really trying, even though everyone says he's not trying," Maller said, "you've already lost the argument."
