The United States men’s national team had already clinched advancement in the World Cup when they took the field against Turkey. They had won their group. The knockout round was secured. So head coach Mauricio Pochetino made nine lineup changes, resting nearly his entire first team. Turkey scored on the final kick of the match and won 3-2. The loss was meaningless in the standings, but for Ben Maller, host of the overnight sports talk show that bears his name, it was a symptom of a much larger problem: the creeping normalization of load management in a tournament that is supposed to be sacred.

Maller’s central argument is that the decision to rest starters in a World Cup match—even one that does not affect advancement—represents a betrayal of the tournament’s supposed gravity. He frames it as an invasive species that has already corrupted the NBA and is now infecting soccer. “This is not the NBA,” Maller says. “It’s not a February game in the NBA. It’s supposedly the global Super Bowl.” The nine lineup changes, he argues, turned a World Cup match into a glorified friendly, a wellness retreat with eucalyptus towels. He calls it load management from the bottom of the deck, a practice that treats the tournament like a cactus league exhibition rather than the sacred event its fans insist it is. The contradiction, in his view, is that the same fans who demand he take soccer serious
