The Dodgers' 25-year, $8.35 billion local TV deal — averaging $334 million a year, one of the richest media contracts in the world — is supposed to be the franchise's secret sauce, the financial engine that lets them outspend everyone. But according to a report Ben Maller leads with, owner Mark Walter recently approached Charter Communications about tearing it up. He wanted to end the Dodgers' and Lakers' cable deals early in exchange for a massive lump-sum payment. The cable company, sensing desperation, offered pennies on the dollar. The math didn't work. Maller frames this as far more than a routine business maneuver.
