AI Summary
5 min readIn the Strait of Hormuz, roughly 20 million barrels of oil flow every day — more than the entire daily oil production of the United States. Iran has the ability to shut that down with mines, missiles, and especially cheap drones that can target tankers from hundreds of miles away. Alex Epstein, an energy policy analyst who runs a network of energy executives, argues that this is the single biggest geopolitical threat to the oil market right now, and that most of the alternatives being discussed are orders of magnitude too small to matter.
The Strait of Hormuz is the only problem that matters
The Strait of Hormuz is not just a chokepoint — it is the chokepoint. Roughly 20 percent of the world's daily oil production passes through it. Epstein emphasizes that there is no replacement for keeping it open. "None of them is 20 million," he says of the alternatives. The U.S. produces roughly 13 million barrels per day; the Strait carries 20 million. If it closes, oil prices spike dramatically, and the global economy takes a direct hit because oil is uniquely valuable for its combination of high energy density and portability. There is no near-term substitute for oil in transportation, shipping, or trade. "If you do not get that thing open, then you have dramatically higher oil prices," Epstein says. "And then the other thing to get is oil prices really matter."
