Demis Hassabis, the legendary AI researcher who founded DeepMind and became the subject of Sebastian Mallaby's book The Infinite Machine, announced this morning that he is stepping down as CEO of Google DeepMind. He will become chairman of the organization and also take on the role of Alphabet's chief scientist. At the same time, Google DeepMind Chief Scientist Jeff Dean — the subject of legendary programmer jokes (compilers don't warn Jeff Dean; Jeff Dean warns compilers) — is leaving after 27 years to start a public benefit corporation with Google senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, focused on accelerating discoveries in machine learning science and engineering.

Its models get vended into YouTube (where you can now ask a one-hour podcast "when did they talk about this?" and get an answer), Google Search, Chrome, Docs, Gmail, and ads. It was never a standalone business unit.
