The Dopamine of Spending: Why You Buy and How to Stop

Rachel Cruze and George Kamel open with an unusual discovery: a Korean shopping simulation website called DopamineCart.com where you can fill a cart and "check out" without spending real money. "You get the dopamine hit without actually needing to spend the money," Cruze explains. There's even a food version called FoodNeverComes.com. The fact that these sites exist tells you something about how shopping works on your brain — and about where we are as a society.

The Three Psychological Drivers of Overspending

Kamel breaks down the three main psychological reasons people spend money they shouldn't. First is the dopamine hit itself: anticipating a purchase triggers your brain's reward center multiple times. You get a hit when you add to cart, another when you get the shipping notification, another when it arrives, another when you open it — and then three weeks later, the thrill is gone and you start the cycle again.

Second is retail therapy: people buy to soothe sadness, anxiety, lack of control, or even to celebrate happiness. "You're so overjoyed about the job promotion, you go out and spend," Cruze notes. Third is FOMO — shopping to fit in socially or achieve something you've always wanted, regardless of whether you can actually afford it.
