Curtis Lee Thomas, founder of Breath Work Detox and author of How to Thrive in the Age of Anxiety, discovered his core technique not through theory but through desperation. After developing a stomach condition that Western medicine could not diagnose, let alone heal, he tried an ancient breathing technique at an event. One session completely eradicated the condition. "I couldn't wrap my head around how one silly little stupid breathing technique fixed my stomach condition," he says. That experience launched his mission to share breathwork as a tool for people whose stress shows up physically — including the many adults with ADHD who live in a state of chronic nervous system overload.

The central insight Thomas offers is that breathwork and meditation are fundamentally different, and that difference matters for ADHD brains. Meditation asks you to sit still, focus on one thing, and calm a chaotic mind — like trying to still a raging sea. For someone with ADHD who is already stressed, this can backfire. "If you try to get somebody who's already stressed out to sit down, sit still, and do not think a thought for the next 20 minutes, you're gonna get more stressed out," Thomas explains.
