The International Energy Agency’s chief warned that more than 80 energy facilities across the Middle East have been damaged since the U.S. and Israel began their war against Iran roughly six weeks ago, and that repairs could take up to two years. Separately, two members of Congress announced their resignations following sexual misconduct allegations, the FAA is moving to cap flights at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport to prevent summer gridlock, and more than a thousand Hollywood figures signed a letter opposing the proposed merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Energy Infrastructure Damage in the Middle East

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol told an audience at the Atlantic Council that more than 80 oil and gas fields, refineries, and energy terminals were damaged in six weeks of conflict. Qatar-based Al Jazeera released footage for the first time showing Iran’s March missile attack on the Ras Laffan gas complex in Qatar, as well as damage to Al Udeid Air Base, where some 10,000 U.S. troops were stationed before the war. Birol warned that repairing the damage could take up to two years. Meanwhile, Iran’s state news agency said the country wants financial compensation from four Gulf Arab states and Jordan for hosting U.S. troops that attacked Iran during the war. Some Arab Gulf states have countered that Iran should pay for region-wide damage.
