Sherlock is going into his fourth straight year in the red. The farmers still holding on are only surviving because land prices are so high, and that serves as collateral to the banks. "We're at a point where we're literally betting the farm," Sherlock said. Farmers also hope the war and geopolitics do not interfere with ongoing trade negotiations with China, traditionally North Dakota's largest buyer of soybeans.
