The FBI is investigating Thursday's attack on a synagogue outside Detroit as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community, after a suspect crashed his truck into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. The truck burst into flames after security guards fired on it, killing the suspect. No one else was killed, but a guard was injured. The FBI’s Detroit office had carried out an active shooter drill at the same synagogue about six weeks ago. Local law enforcement noted that global tensions, particularly in the Middle East, have kept them on alert.

War in Iran and Hezbollah strikes escalate

As the Iran war approaches the two-week mark, Iran’s supreme leader vowed to fight on and keep the strategic Strait of Hormuz shut down. A message attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei was read Thursday by a television presenter as both sides trade airstrikes. Israel has also been targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Israeli military said it started a new wave of strikes in the Lebanese capital, issuing evacuation orders for parts of central Beirut for the first time since the beginning of the war in Iran. Explosions rocked the city as strikes hit a building in the Bashura neighborhood, just one kilometer from downtown Beirut. It is a busy commercial area close to the Prime Minister’s office. The Israeli military did not immediately say what it was targeting in the building.
