The Return of Fable 5 and a New Government Relationship
On June 9th, Anthropic released its frontier model Methos V alongside Fable 5, a guardrail version. Three days later, the White House issued an export control action preventing Anthropic from making the model available to foreign nationals. Since Anthropic lacked KYC systems to determine user nationality, they shut down the model entirely.
The trigger: an Amazon researcher discovered how to break Fable 5's guardrails. During the subsequent investigation, Anthropic, Amazon, and the U.S. government found that Fable 5, Opus 4.8, GPT 5.5, and Kimi K 2.7 could all reproduce the same troublesome behavior. The problem wasn't unique to Fable 5.
