Start and End with Kindness

On December 22nd, Chris Swell decided to start getting back into shape. Not on January 1st, which would have been the obvious marker, but on a random Tuesday in late December, because that was the day she finally felt motivated and physically able to move again after a period of health struggles. This small decision became the living example of the episode's central argument: kindness — particularly toward yourself — matters more than arbitrary dates, external pressure, or the stories we tell ourselves about what we "should" be doing and when.

The Judgment Trap

Swell opens by acknowledging that judgment is nearly as natural as breathing. It serves a purpose — it helps us see who we are and who we want to be, and it can motivate us. But it becomes harmful when we compare ourselves to others without knowing all the factors that go into their situation, and especially when that lack of kindness is directed inward. She observes that the pandemic seems to have intensified this dynamic, producing either extraordinary kindness or a striking lack of compassion, particularly among strangers. Her insight is that when people exude a lack of compassion outward, there is usually a lack of compassion inward as well — it's a signal that something is off internally.

Show Notes

It's a new year! But even when it's not, today's message is important.
Be kind.
When you end something - a year, a goal, a job, or project, or even a relationship - look at it and release (if needed) with kindness. When you begin something new, start it with kindness. Know your whys, review, evaluate, learn, and plan. Even in failure, bring in a lens of compassion and you'll feel so much better and even clearer about it. We judge, we all do! But when you introduce kindness into your judgment, everything can change in the best ways. Give it a try and see. You'll feel a little bit better!
