Sabrina Zohar once sent 173 texts to a man who had just broken things off with her. She was 24, they had been seeing each other for two months, and she didn't even particularly like him. "I genuinely believed on the other side of the next message, that was gonna be the one. That was gonna be the one thing I'm gonna say that'll get this person back." He never answered. Zohar's meltdowns weren't about the men she was chasing. They were about a childhood with a volatile, emotionally unavailable father who disowned her multiple times—once at 16, again at 28. "Every guy that I would have these immense reactions to were just replications of what I learned growing up. Like be big, get someone's attention." She had internalized a message from her family that she was "too much," and her response was to try harder: sleep with men quickly, act nonchalant, be low-pressure, all while crying in bed. "I was constantly hoping that if I'm low pressure, this person's going to choose me. And we know that is not the recipe for a healthy relationship."
