Stage three is slow-wave sleep, the deepest stage, when large, synchronized waves sweep through the brain, acting as a "bilge pump" that clears out misfolded proteins and metabolic debris. Finally, REM sleep is where the most vivid, story-like dreams occur, and the body is paralyzed to prevent acting them out.
