The instruction manual for building a human body is about two meters of DNA, condensed into every single cell. But if every cell contains the same complete set of instructions, how does a brain cell know to be a brain cell and not a liver cell? And more provocatively, could the experiences of a parent—say, learning to dislike a particular smell or becoming better at finding food—somehow get written into that instruction manual and passed to offspring? Dr. Oded Rechavi, a professor at Tel Aviv University who studies the nematode worm C. elegans, explains what we actually know about the inheritance of acquired traits, where the evidence stands, and why the conversation is shifting from DNA to RNA.
The IKEA Catalog Analogy for Gene Expression
Every cell in the body contains the same genome—the complete set of genetic instructions made of DNA. But different cells need different parts of those instructions. Rechavi uses a useful analogy: the genome is like an IKEA catalog that exists in every room of a house. In the kitchen, you only pull out the page for building kitchen furniture; in the living room, you pull out the page for the chair. The specific page you remove and copy is the messenger RNA (messenger RNA), and the actual furniture you build is the protein.

What you'll learn
- 1 (00:00) **Introduction to the Episode** - Andrew Huberman introduces the topic of genes, RNA, and the inheritance of acquired traits with Dr. Oded Rechavi.
- 2 (01:39) **The IKEA Analogy: DNA, RNA, and Proteins** - Dr. Rechavi explains the central dogma of molecular biology using the metaphor of an IKEA instruction book.
- 3 (03:44) **The Weismann Barrier: Soma vs. Germline** - The first major barrier to inheriting acquired traits is the separation of body cells from reproductive cells.
- 4 (08:10) **Lamarck vs. Darwin: The Giraffe's Neck** - The discussion contrasts Lamarckian inheritance of acquired traits with Darwinian natural selection.
- 5 (10:13) **The Second Barrier: Epigenetic Reprogramming** - Chemical modifications on DNA are largely erased between generations, creating a "blank slate" in the embryo.
- 6 (13:10) **The Cutting Edge: RNA as a Candidate for Inheritance** - Dr. Rechavi introduces RNA as a molecule with the potential to transmit information across generations, bypassing traditional barriers.
- 7 (14:11) **Why Worms? The Power of C. elegans** - Dr. Rechavi explains why the microscopic worm C. elegans is the ideal model for studying transgenerational inheritance.

Show Notes
In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. Oded Rechavi, a professor at Tel Aviv University who studies genetics, epigenetics and the inheritance of acquired traits. We discuss how DNA, RNA and epigenetic mechanisms determine what information can pass between generations, and why acquired traits are generally not thought to be inherited. We also explain research in C. elegans showing how small RNAs can transmit antiviral resistance and influence behavior across generations, what these findings might mean for mammals and humans, and potential future applications for reproductive health and diagnostics.
