When Odysseus, still nameless and unknown, sat weeping in the palace of King Alcinous as the blind minstrel Demodocus sang of the fall of Troy, he revealed something he had tried hard to conceal. The entire episode turns on a single question: how long can a man keep his identity hidden when the stories of his own life are being sung before him? Odysseus had survived shipwreck, had been found naked on the shore by the princess Nausicaa, and had been brought to the Phoenician court as a suppliant seeking passage home. But the songs of his own heroic past began to undo his carefully maintained anonymity.
The Suppliant at the Hearth
Odysseus entered the palace of Alcinous with nothing but his need. He passed the golden doors and silver doorposts, the orchard where fruit never fell but ripened in endless succession, and knelt before Queen Arete, clasping her knees in the traditional gesture of supplication. "After many toils and perils, I am come to thee and to thy husband," he said, and then withdrew to sit in the ashes of the hearth with his head bowed. An aged counsellor rebuked the king for allowing a stranger to remain in such a position, and Alcinous raised him, gave him a seat, and promised to provide a ship and company to take him home.

Previously in Part 7:
Previously, Odysseus was still being held on Calypso’s beautiful island, longing to return home to Ithaka despite her offer of immortality. At last, the gods intervened, and Calypso was ordered to let him go, allowing Odysseus to build a raft and set out across the sea. His escape was almost destroyed when Poseidon sent a violent storm that shattered his raft and left him struggling for his life. Exhausted, Odysseus finally reached the land of the Phaeacians, where he was discovered by the young princess Nausicaa. She showed him kindness, gave him food and clothing, and directed him towards the palace where he might finally find help on his journey home.
