AI Summary
5 min read“The vault word is as broad and undefined as the word token,” says Adrian Cachinero, co-founder of Steakhouse. Just as a token can represent anything from a security to a governance vote or a meme, a vault can be anything from a rigid, overcollateralized lending pool to a fully discretionary manager with an EOA. This open-endedness is both the sector’s greatest strength and its biggest source of confusion. Cachinero joins Bankless to unpack what vaults actually are, how they evolved, where the real growth is going, and why the most exciting part of the space might also be the most boring.

Vaults didn’t emerge from nowhere. Their direct predecessor was the isolated lending market, pioneered and formalized by Morpho. Before Morpho, pool-based lending models like Aave had powerful network effects — all liquidity was pooled, enabling rehypothecation of collateral — but they also concentrated risk. Morpho broke lending down into “atomic units”: individual, opinionated markets for specific collateral pairs. This made each market far safer and more transparent, but it also destroyed the network effects. A single Morpho market on its own has very little value because liquidity is fragmented.
