AI Summary
5 min readWhen Molly Sheets was hiking the John Muir Trail through the Sierra Nevada this year, she told herself she wanted to come back and do it again with no snow and no mosquitoes. She got her wish—two mosquitoes the whole trip, 220 miles of clear trail, and then she came home to the reality of looking for her next engineering leadership role. Sheets, formerly a director of engineering at Zynga and a principal solutions architect at Amazon, is in what she calls a "mini retirement," and she sat down with AB Testing host Allen Page to talk about what she’s learned from stepping away, what she thinks about AI’s impact on software engineering, and why she believes the most important skill for developers today isn’t coding—it’s systems thinking.
The developer as manager of agents
Sheets and Page agree that the rise of AI-assisted coding is changing the fundamental role of the software developer, but not in the way the headlines suggest. Developers aren't being replaced; they're being promoted—into managers of non-deterministic agents. The problem, as Sheets sees it, is that most people treat AI as a magic code generator: "Claude, make me this code to do X. It compiles and it runs. They go, yay." But compiling and running isn't the same as understanding, and it certainly isn't the same as building something reliable.
