Instead of leaning into what he knew, he took a job at Microsoft working on Windows Mobile because mobile felt like the next thing. "If I was a time traveler, I would have sent a message back to myself and said, just stay working on web stuff," Tan says. "You literally have five years of experience on top of everyone else. You could have built any kind of social software. But instead I was 22, being whipped around by whatever I could read in the Wall Street Journal."
