Ben Horowitz, co-founder and general partner at a16z, opened his conversation with general partner Alex Rampell at the FinTech Connect Conference with a blunt observation: two foundational laws of software engineering that held for fifty years have been overturned by AI. The second was customer lock-in: possession was nine-tenths of the law. Migration costs, data lock-in, user interface dependence—all the moats that protected incumbents are dissolving. Code is easy to replicate, data is easy to move, and the user interface is increasingly an AI that doesn't care about your design. "That moat is gone," Horowitz said.
