Your mind will wander. That is not a failure; it is the practice. In this guided meditation, host Joe leads a breath-counting exercise designed to give the nervous system a few moments of recalibration. The core mechanism is deceptively simple: count each complete breath from one to ten, then back down from ten to one. But the real teaching lies in what happens when you lose count.

The Mechanics of Counting

The practice begins with a single deep breath in through the nose and a full exhale out through the mouth. After that, the breath returns to its natural rhythm. You are not trying to control it, only to notice it. The counting starts: inhale, that is one; exhale, that is two. You work your way up to ten, then reverse the direction back down to one.

The key instruction is this: "If your mind wanders, or if you lose your place, simply begin again." There is no frustration, no judgment, no starting over from a penalty. You just bring your awareness back to the breath and continue onward. The counting gives the mind a single, simple object to hold, which creates a structure for attention. Without the counting, the mind drifts. With it, you have a gentle anchor.

🌬️ This meditation uses the breath as a single point of focus, helping to slow down a busy or anxious mind and bring your attention back into the present moment. Through the practice of breath counting, we’ll strengthen our focus and concentration while creating space from the thoughts that can contribute to feelings of stress or anxiety.

During this practice, we’ll count the breath from one to ten before making our way back down again (with guidance).  You’ll have a few minutes of your own to carry on this practice without guidance as well. This is a simple technique you can return to whenever your mind feels scattered, your thoughts feel overwhelming, or you simply need a few moments to slow down and refocus.

With love,

Jo
