On November 22, 1963, a 24-year-old loner named Lee Harvey Oswald used a $13 Italian rifle he ordered from a mail-order catalog to assassinate President John F. Kennedy in Dallas. He was killed two days later by Jack Ruby, a nightclub owner who the Warren Commission described as "a sad and strange little man." Within hours of the shooting, a reporter pressed a police officer for details on the weapon, and the officer guessed it might have been a Mauser. That incorrect guess, published without qualification, became one of the earliest seeds of doubt in a case that would grow into the mother of all American conspiracy theories.

The Vacuum Where Certainty Should Have Been

The assassination happened at a unique moment in American history. The public had unprecedented access to information about the investigation, but no satisfying resolution. Unlike typical criminal cases where details are held back to protect the investigation, the Kennedy case was the opposite—information flooded out early, but the Warren Commission's report failed to put a conclusive "bow on it." The government was simultaneously withholding information about other nefarious activities (the FBI and CIA were "at their zenith" of doing "quite evil things"), which meant that when the government said "trust us" about the assassination, many people reasonably didn't.
