Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez noticed something strange: everyone kept saying "we're more divided than ever," but nobody seemed bothered enough to do anything about it. The church, she realized, had grown content with division. Worse, it had confused unity with something far cheaper—uniformity. That realization sent her into a season of grief, then into Scripture, and eventually into writing False Peace, a book that argues the church has been settling for a counterfeit version of oneness that actually undermines what God wants.
The Difference Between Unity and Uniformity
The core distinction in Perreaux-Dominguez's framework is simple but carries heavy implications. Unity means different parts functioning together as one body. Uniformity means everyone becoming the same. The church, she argues, has defaulted to uniformity because it is easier. It does not require paying attention to different kinds of people—their cultures, disabilities, genders, or needs. It does not require making space for voices that might challenge the majority.

People say, “We’re more divided than ever before,” but are we okay with that, or are we going to do something about it? Are we normalizing division and disrespecting God by not prioritizing something He does?
Jackie and Preston are joined by Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez for a conversation on fighting for unity in the church. Unity does not mean erasing differences to have complete uniformity – that can lead to tribalism, idolatry, and ultimately dehumanization. The church has to be willing to lean into discomfort for the sake of unity in the Body of Christ, and that’s going to require us to actively pursue proximity, curiosity, humility, and honest conversations.
