Tina Friml: Living in the Bonus Round

The first time Tina Friml learned something was "wrong" with her, she was five years old, sitting in the car at night with her family. Her older brother suddenly piped up from the backseat: "Hey mom and dad, so why does Tina talk weird?" He wasn't even asking her directly—he was asking their parents, as if she weren't there. Her parents panicked, went silent, and then said, "We're not going to talk about this." In that moment, young Friml absorbed two messages: something was wrong with her, and it was shameful, something that couldn't be acknowledged.

What cerebral palsy actually is

Friml was born with cerebral palsy caused by oxygen deprivation during a difficult birth. She was clinically dead for twenty minutes before a doctor resuscitated her. The permanent brain damage affects her motor control—she walks with an unsteady gait and speaks slowly. But here's the disorienting part: in her own head, she sounds completely normal. Her internal experience of her own voice is clear, unhindered, quick. This creates a strange disconnect. She didn't feel different growing up; she was just told she was different, constantly.
