Episode 197: The Illinois Central Electric Wreck

On October 30, 1972, during the morning rush hour on Chicago’s Illinois Central Electric commuter line, a train crew decided to back up a few hundred feet to let a single passenger off at a flag stop. That decision, combined with a black-painted train front, missing safety flags, no speedometers, and a culture of rule-breaking, led to a rear-end collision that killed 45 people and injured 320. It remains one of the worst railroad accidents in American history.

The Illinois Central Electric: A System Built for Density

The Illinois Central Electric was not a typical commuter railroad. By the 1940s, it carried over 100,000 riders daily on a 15-minute headway, with trains running every two to three minutes at peak hours. The system was electrified at 1,500 volts DC, used automatic block signaling, and had high-level platforms for rapid boarding. It was, in essence, a high-capacity rapid transit line that happened to be operated by a private freight railroad.

But by the 1960s, the system was in decline. The opening of the Dan Ryan expressway and the CTA Red Line—built in the median of that highway—drew away intra-city riders. The Illinois Central responded by raising fares, closing stations, and focusing on suburban commuters. The equipment aged. The old heavyweight electric multiple units, built in the 1920s, were tired. The railroad needed new trains.
