AI Summary
5 min readIn the early days of Welcome to Night Vale, co-creator Joseph Fink wrote the first episode as a series of disconnected paragraphs set in the same strange town, with no real plot in mind. "If you listen to the pilot with that in mind, you can kind of hear it," he says. "There's not like a much of a story to the pilot. It's more just here's a lot of vignettes from this strange place just trying to figure out what it is." That improvisational origin has shaped how the show has been built for 14 years — not from a master plan, but from a process of noticing loose threads and pulling on them.
How the show is actually written
Most of Welcome to Night Vale's sprawling mythology was never planned in advance. Fink and co-creator Jeffrey Cranor describe their method as "backwards continuity": they look at what they've already written and find new stories to tell with it. "I noticed I introduced this thing in episode three or whatever, and we never addressed it," Fink says. "I think it would be really interesting to bring that back and tell a story with it." Occasionally they do sit down and plan something two or three years ahead, but that is the exception rather than the rule.
