Werewolves Exist in the Adirondacks

Deep in the Adirondacks, a seasonal hotel stands haunted by something that howls at the moon, breaks in when it pleases, and has killed before. This story, sent anonymously and titled "Werewolves Exist in the Adirondacks," tells of the tense struggle for survival a crew of caretakers endure against something that should only exist in horror films and legend.

For 11 years, the narrator's outfit had the contract to winterize a hotel on Little Sable Lake. Three of them—the narrator, Gary, and Sully—would drive up and spend five days shutting the place down. It paid very well. During the 2011 excursion, someone died up there, and his team has not been back since.

The Setup and the Warning

The hotel is nine miles off the main road, built in 1902 with 300 rooms, a dining room with a maple floor you could land a plane on, and 40 acres of lawn running down to the water. It opens Memorial Day and closes Columbus Day, belonging to a family trust in Connecticut. The caretaker, Walt, had been there since 1979, living in a cottage behind the boathouse with a black lab named Pepper. From mid-October to the end of April, he was the only person on the property.
