Bird people and deep space shrapnel

The hosts of Unexplainable recently dug through their archive of saved science articles and found two pieces that reframe everyday phenomena in ways they never expected. One asks what actually triggers a lightning bolt—and the answer may involve gamma rays and cosmic debris from dying stars. The other asks why birds, despite having big brains, long lives, and vocal communication, never developed complex human-like culture. Both articles share a willingness to look at familiar things from an unfamiliar angle, and both end up raising deeper questions about how evolution works and what counts as "advanced."

The lightning trigger problem

We know what lightning is: static electricity on a massive scale, built up when ice, water droplets, and hail inside thunderclouds rub against each other through turbulence and updrafts. But there is a problem. The electric charge inside a cloud is not strong enough to break apart air molecules and release what science writer Charlie Wood calls "an avalanche of electrons that crash across the sky." Something else must be pushing the system over that threshold.
