The endometrium is the tissue that lines the uterus, building up each month to create a nurturing environment for a potential fetus. When no fertilized egg arrives, the body essentially instructs this lining to destroy itself — sloughing off layers of tissue in what we experience as menstruation. But here's the remarkable part: as soon as one section of the endometrium begins to shed, the adjacent section gets a signal to start repairing. The result is a tissue that heals in three to five days, not two to three weeks like skin. And it heals without scarring, restoring the original tissue rather than building less-functional scar tissue.
