In February 1925, an 11-year-old Romanian girl named Eleonore Zugun was walking to her grandmother’s village with her cousins when she spotted a coin on the road. Her cousins warned her not to touch it—it was “the devil’s money,” left by an evil spirit to tempt the innocent. Eleonore ignored them, picked up the coin, and bought sweets she refused to share. When her grandmother found out, she delivered a chilling verdict: “You have swallowed the devil, and you will never be free from him.” The next day, stones began flying at the grandmother’s house, breaking windows, always aimed at Eleonore. So began one of the most thoroughly documented poltergeist cases of the 20th century—a two-year ordeal that would take Eleonore from a Romanian village to a monastery, an asylum, and eventually a countess’s apartment in Vienna, where scientists, journalists, and psychical researchers watched objects move, bite marks appear on her skin, and needles materialize out of thin air.

Show Notes

After eleven-year-old Eleonore Zugun picked up a coin she was warned belonged to the Devil, strange things began happening around her. Stones flew through windows, objects moved on their own, and scratches, bite marks, and even needles mysteriously appeared on her body. Eleonore named the entity tormenting her Dracu, the devil, and the activity followed her from Romania to Vienna and eventually London.

In more than 3,000 documented incidents, scientists, doctors, skeptics, and paranormal investigator Harry Price witnessed objects flying, marks appearing on Eleonore’s skin, and Dracu seemingly responding to investigators. Then, after two years, it suddenly stopped.
