On August 27, 2001, a FedEx driver pulled up to a home on Palm Lake Circle in Dr. Phillips, Florida, and heard a smoke alarm. He knocked, found the door unlocked, and saw flames inside. Firefighters arrived within minutes. When they walked through the house afterward, they found a body on the bed — nude, hands tied behind the back, feet bound, face covered with a towel. The victim was Kathy Sue Weaver, a 52-year-old woman who had just bought the home as her dream house. The fire had been set deliberately. The question was who had done it, and why.
A Life Built on Her Own Terms
Sue Weaver grew up in St. Joseph, Missouri, the youngest of three children in a close-knit family that ran Weaver Overhead Door Company, one of the oldest family-owned garage door businesses in the country. After earning an MBA from the University of Kansas, she spent 22 years in banking before deciding to follow her creative instincts. In 1994, at age 45, she quit her corporate job, moved to Florida with her boyfriend Mike Chandler, and founded Embroidery Concept Incorporated — a custom embroidery digitizing company. Her work was good enough to land clients like Disney, Universal, and Warner Brothers.
