On January 12, 1995, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer walked out of her dorm at the Knoxville Job Corps Center with three classmates, believing she was going to Blockbuster Music with a girl who had recently stopped bullying her and wanted to be friends. She never came back. The next morning, groundskeepers found her body near an old steam plant on the University of Tennessee's agricultural campus—so badly beaten and cut that the first officer on scene couldn't tell whether he was looking at her face. The crime scene eventually tripled in size as investigators found blood, drag marks, and chunks of bloody asphalt across an area the size of a basketball court. When her body was cleaned at the morgue, a pentagram was found carved into her chest and forehead.

Show Notes
For more than thirty years, headlines have focused on Christa Pike. Her childhood, her appeals, her execution. But this story was never supposed to be about her! That's what she always wanted - ALL the attention, and she's STILL getting it. Colleen Slemmer is the real victim here. In January 1995, Colleen was 19 and 400 miles from home, a quiet, kind girl from Orange Park, Florida, chasing a computer certificate at the Knoxville Job Corps Center in Tennessee. She studied every night. She was there to succeed. And on a cold, wet Thursday night, she walked out of her dorm with three classmates… and never signed back in.This is the whole, real story of Colleen: who she was, what happened behind that old steam plant, the warnings nobody took seriously, and the mother who has spent three decades fighting for her daughter, piece by piece. Plus, where things stand right now, after Tennessee’s failed execution attempt made national headlines. Her name was Colleen Slemmer. Let’s make sure people remember it.
