The Body in the Backyard

On a Sunday morning, a woman discovered a decomposing body in her backyard—a young woman who had been savagely murdered, strangled and beaten, then left on a bike trailer just one block from where a man named Jimmy had been camping. The victim was 19-year-old Zariah, a vulnerable young woman experiencing homelessness and struggling with addiction, whom Jimmy claimed he had been trying to protect.

When detectives arrived at Jimmy's encampment, they found him initially defiant, refusing to cooperate. But once they presented a search warrant and explained they would be taking his clothes, fingernail clippings, cheek swabs, and photographs, his demeanor shifted from hostile to cooperative. "That's different," he said, suddenly willing to talk.

The Protector Narrative

Jimmy presented himself as Zariah's guardian. He described her as "really stinky and nasty and gross" and explained that he had given her clothes—a yellow shirt that said "Buff family" and black shorts—along with $10 to buy fruit. He claimed he was trying to clean her up and keep her away from people who were giving her drugs. "Nobody helps her," he insisted. "Nobody does nothing for her."
