In the early morning hours following the death of her ten-year-old daughter Victoria, Michelle Martens sat in a police interview room and told a story that would shift dramatically over the course of the conversation. She began by describing a violent attack by her roommate Jessica Kelly—a woman she had taken in as a favor to her boyfriend Fabian, who she said was Jessica's cousin. According to Martens' initial account, Jessica had burst into the bedroom around 5 a.m., asked if she believed in God, and then struck her in the face with a metal iron. But the detective, who had already interviewed Fabian, knew the evidence told a different story, and he systematically pressed Martens toward a confession that would reveal what really happened to her daughter.
