A 55-year-old man named Mike is sitting in an interrogation room, and he does not seem to understand why he is there. He has been arrested on suspicion of homicide, but the detective has not yet charged him. The detective tells him that forensic teams are currently searching his property, that cadaver dogs have hit on something in his basement, and that his own neighbors reported hearing gunshots coming from inside his house. Mike, a former Navy brat who now runs an Airbnb out of a historic property he bought for next to nothing eleven years ago, insists he has no idea what happened to Austin and Jessica, the couple who had been living with him during the COVID-19 quarantine. He describes Austin as a "prolific thief" and a meth user who owed money to cartels, and he seems almost offended that the police did not simply knock on his door first.
