After a brief period of genuine pluralism following the Tanzimat reforms of the 1830s and 40s, the empire turned sharply toward a proto-fascist Turkish supremacism under the Three Pashas during World War I. That regime conducted the Armenian genocide (1.1 million killed), alongside massacres of Maronite Christians and Pontic Greeks.
