Curt Cronin grew up in Dewitt, Illinois, a tiny farm town ninety miles southwest of Chicago, where he thought "about the rate that crops grew." He was asleep in the back of his family's van at age sixteen when a Marine gate guard mistook his father for the superintendent of the Naval Academy and saluted him. His father decided on the spot: "You're going." Cronin went reluctantly, was ranked dead last in his company, and nearly quit until a friend gave him James Webb's A Sense of Honor. Reading it, he realized the struggling plebe in the story was him. "The moment I saw it, it fundamentally changed my entire experience," he says. What Buds Actually Tests

People think Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL school is about physical rigor. Cronin says it's only physically rigorous "to test for mental and spiritual resiliency." The training is designed to simulate combat by making trainees "comfortable being uncomfortable" — sitting in 60-degree surf for hours, running with boats on their heads, doing log PT where the log cannot be lifted unless everyone lifts as one. The point is interdependence, not individual toughness.
