LinkedIn Masterclass: How to Fix Your Profile, Get Found, and Attract More Opportunities

When Shari taught her LinkedIn class at Stanford's business school, she started by asking how many students had filled out their "About Me" section. Usually, only about half raised their hands. These were business students with an average of five years of professional experience. If Stanford MBAs aren't using the most valuable real estate on their profiles, chances are you aren't either.

Shari spent nearly five years working at LinkedIn on both the profile team and LinkedIn Learning, and she now teaches a quarterly class at Stanford on writing a winning "About Me" section. She's also a LinkedIn Top Voice with over 35,000 followers. The core insight she brings from her time inside the company is simple: LinkedIn runs on metadata. Every piece of information you add—past roles, skills, recommendations, volunteer experience—gets stored and searched. When a recruiter looks for someone in the Bay Area with specific skills and experience, the more your profile is filled out, the more likely you are to appear in their results. "The whole point of your LinkedIn is to present yourself to the outside world," Shari says, "because once you do that, more opportunities are available to you."
