Mark Dowdle had 15 minutes. After a delayed flight, a mad dash through Amsterdam, and a private jet pilot who got him there in 20 minutes instead of 45, he arrived at the starting line of Germany's Last Soul Ultra Marathon in jeans with a suitcase. Two minutes later, the race began. He ran 395 miles in just under 94 hours without sleep. He won.
The race was a backyard ultra: runners complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour on the hour until only one person remains. Dowdle ran each loop in about 50 minutes, then lay down for five minutes of fragmented sleep, woke to his wife feeding him pancakes and steak at 3 a.m., and walked to the starting corral. He did this 94 times.
The real obstacle is the story you tell yourself
The physical challenge of a backyard ultra is real, but Dowdle says the genuine obstacle is "dealing with the unknown because you don't know when the race is going to end." Runners constantly compare themselves to others, creating stories in their minds about their own inadequacy. "I can only feel my pain," Dowdle said. "Then I look at somebody else who might be doing a good job of posturing and I will perceive myself as worse off or less than or not capable enough because of a perception that I've created in my mind."
