Erin Brockovich did not set out to become a symbol of environmental activism. She was a dyslexic single mother who hated being told she could not do things, took a clerical job at a law firm out of desperation, and opened a file box that did not make sense. Inside were medical records mixed with real estate documents—children’s blood tests with abnormal T-cell counts and white cell counts, alongside paperwork about Pacific Gas and Electric trying to buy a woman’s property. That mismatch, that thing that did not add up, became the Hinkley, California groundwater contamination case that eventually yielded a $333 million settlement and an Oscar-winning film. Decades later, Brockovich is seeing the same pattern with data centers: secrecy, non-disclosure agreements, communities finding out about massive construction only after it starts, and the same fundamental question—why are they hiding this if it is safe?

The power of not knowing what you cannot do

Brockovich’s dyslexia was not diagnosed until later in life, and she was told throughout school that she could not do much. That message had the opposite effect. She developed a reflexive resistance to being labeled or boxed in. “I don’t like being judged. I don’t like being put in a box,” she says. “Fuck off. That’s the best motto.”
