From All-American Kid to Drug Trafficker to Faith: The Travis Harwood Story

Travis Harwood grew up in Maine with a police officer father and an ER nurse mother — a normal, all-American family. But when his younger brother, who suffered from severe asthma, died unexpectedly at a friend's house, the family shattered. His mother blamed herself, his father buried the pain, and no one talked about it. "I just immediately put these walls up," Harwood recalls. "That second they were built where I could just feel nothing." That moment set him on a trajectory that would lead him into the heart of Maine's underground drug trade, running hundreds of pounds of weed and managing a crew of Somali immigrants used as untraceable enforcers.

The Mechanics of Moving Weight

Harwood's entry into the drug world came through a father figure — an older man who owned half of Portland and ran a massive marijuana operation before legalization. The setup was sophisticated. Harwood's boss brought in Somali immigrants from rival tribes, housing them in government-subsidized apartments while using them to collect drug debts. Because the Somalis had no traceable identities — many carried IDs with the same January 1 birthdate — they could kick down doors and steal without consequence. "They can't be persecuted by the law," Harwood explains. "If they kick down a door and rob somebody, who was it?"
