The process of bringing a new car from sketch to showroom floor takes five or six years. That means the vehicles hitting dealerships this summer were conceived back in the early 2020s, when COVID was still reshaping daily life and the EV revolution seemed inevitable. The old way of making cars

Car design has historically been a deeply manual, multi-stage craft. It begins with sketches responding to a product brief — two doors or four, seating capacity, performance targets. From paper sketches, designers move to digital renderings, then to 3D models. At some point, someone carves the design out of clay — first in small scale, then full size — to see how it actually looks in the real world. Those full-scale clay models are genuine works of art, often painted by hand and rolled onto stages as concept cars with no engine or interior inside.
