The Attack That Never Stopped

On June 8, 1967, Bryce Lockwood was a 20-year-old Marine sergeant serving as a Russian linguist aboard the USS Liberty, a National Security Agency intelligence ship stationed in the eastern Mediterranean. At roughly 2:00 p.m. local time, he heard a tremendous noise. He had never been under hostile fire before, but he knew immediately they were in trouble. What followed was a 25-minute attack by Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats that killed 34 Americans, wounded 174, and left Lockwood trapped in a flooding compartment with an unconscious sailor, trying to keep his head above water while pounding on a sealed hatch.

The Ship and Its Mission

The USS Liberty was originally a World War II victory-class freighter, later converted into an intelligence vessel at a cost of $26 million in 1965 money. She carried the Univac 500—then the world's largest mobile computer—and a crew of 294, of whom roughly 190 were intelligence personnel: linguists, code breakers, Morse operators, and voice intercept operators. When war broke out between Israel and its neighbors on June 5, 1967, the National Security Agency ordered the Liberty to proceed with haste to the eastern Mediterranean to monitor the situation.

Sgt. Bryce Lockwood is a retired United States Marine Corps veteran and one of the last surviving crew members of the USS Liberty. A Russian linguist and intelligence specialist, he was aboard the virtually unarmed intelligence ship when it was attacked by Israeli forces on June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War. Despite suffering severe burns, he displayed extraordinary heroism by rescuing three trapped sailors from flooded compartments below deck, earning the Silver Star for gallantry and the Purple Heart for his wounds. He later served in Vietnam and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant.
