The Collapse of Free Speech—and the People Who Promised to Defend It

A year after Charlie Kirk's murder, Tucker Carlson opens with a question: What was his life about? The answer, Carlson argues, was free speech rooted in Christian theology—the belief that each person, created by God as a sovereign individual, possesses an inherent right to speak their conscience. Kirk's position was absolute: even hate speech must be protected, because "hate" is a subjective term wielded by whoever holds power. The only legitimate response to speech you dislike is more speech.

That principle, Carlson contends, is now being abandoned by the very people who claimed to uphold it.

The Mechanism of Censorship

Carlson draws a sharp distinction between three categories. Free speech is the inherent right to say what you believe is true. Slander is a legal category defined by factual falsehood. Hate speech, as Charlie Kirk explained, is effectively "speech the people in charge hate." The key insight: protected speech is true, or sincerely believed to be true by the speaker. Suppressing it means treating the speaker as less than human—as a slave whose voice can be silenced.
